July is National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month, which might seem surprising for a national observance, but this crime occurs more frequently than you might expect. Last month, the Pasco Sheriff’s Office arrested a 12-year-old for auto burglary. The juvenile was captured on surveillance attempting to pull multiple vehicle door handles and unlawfully entering several cars, taking various items, including a handgun.
Crimes like these remind us how important it is to complete the #9PMRoutine each night. For those who don’t know, the #9PMRoutine is a
nightly practice to remove all valuables from your vehicle and lock the doors to your car and home. This initiative was created by PSO in 2016 after we experienced an increase in crimes such as vehicle theft, and the reminder remains as relevant today as it was then.
As we always say, everyone plays a role in community safety. Hence our motto, “We Fight As One.” While we can’t prevent all crimes, we can make a significant impact by stopping those within our control. Help us reduce crimes of opportunity like these by locking your doors.

While these steps can enhance your safety when a hurricane approaches, it’s also important to know what to do during the storm and immediately after. Our latest article highlights how to stay connected during a hurricane, assess damage once the weather clears, and avoid unlicensed contractors. PSO encourages citizens to read this information and apply it if we experience any hurricanes this season.

On National Best Friends Day, the Pasco Sheriff’s Office highlighted the unique bond between handlers and K9s. Through training and responding to emergency calls for service, these teams learn to trust each other with their lives. Read more about how these strong partnerships take form in our recent article.
We Fight As One Wednesday: On June 16th, the Pasco Sheriff’s Office, New Port Richey Police Department, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and U.S. Coast Guard were all dispatched for a water rescue call. Two individuals were paddleboarding when they were swept away and unable to get back to shore. The PSO Aviation Unit quickly located the two individuals by air and coordinated with the NPR Marine unit for a successful rescue.
This rescue highlights the importance of rapid response and seamless coordination amongst local agencies. We are grateful for these strong partnerships that help keep Pasco County safe.
All rise for the not-so-honorable Jury Duty Scammer. 🧑⚖️
This type of scammer will call claiming to work at the Pasco Sheriff’s Office and request payment for missing jury duty. The caller instructs the victim that payment is required to resolve the issue. These payments are made via PayPal, Bitcoin, Zelle, and similar services. To lend legitimacy to their claim, scammers often use blocked or spoofed numbers associated with PSO. They may even use the name of an actual PSO member. Techniques such as these can make it difficult to identify a scammer. Therefore, PSO reminds Pasco County residents that we do not manage jury duty notifications. We will never contact individuals to request payment to resolve issues, criminal or otherwise.
