The Public Information Office is part of the Community Relations Section and coordinates the dissemination of crime information and other items of interest to the news media. The Public Information Office coordinates press conferences and interviews with Sheriff’s Office personnel; advises the Sheriff on media relations and potential media issues; escorts media personnel during breaking news incidents and special events; and creates media releases about issues and events in the Sheriff’s Office.
The Public Information Office is also tasked with maintaining the agency’s official social media presence, the PSO Internet web site, video productions, and many agency publications including the citizen’s newsletter The Sheriff’s Report.
When providing crime news to the mass media, care is taken to withhold information that is confidential or exempt under applicable state and case law, to protect victims and to avoid the release of information that could jeopardize a criminal investigation or prosecution.
The Pasco Sheriff’s Office has a community relations director and two public information officers. Regular office hours are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m to 5 p.m. (Eastern Time). They are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for breaking news on major incidents. Contact the Communications Unit supervisor (727-847-8102) to request information from the on-call public information officer.
The Pasco Sheriff’s Office utilizes Tampa Bay Media Alert for the majority of its releases concerning breaking news. This service is free to government agencies and ensures that all mass media subscribers receive text and photo releases quickly and at the same time.
