Sheriff's Child Protection Investigative Unit Helping Another Agency

The Pasco Sheriff's Office Child Protective Investigations Unit (CPI) is now helping The Department of Children and Families (DCF) cases in Lee County. About a half dozen child protective investigators from the Pasco Sheriff's Office will be working in Fort Myers to reduce their counterparts backlog to zero.

By Florida Statute, a child abuse investigation must be closed within sixty days of a report being generated. "Backlog" is when a child abuse investigation exceeds sixty days. The Lee county DCF at one time had a backlog of nearly 700 cases. The Pasco Sheriff's Office CPI Unit started working in Fort Myers on February 7, and planned to stay for about a month.

CPI Director, Steve Blumenthal sees this as an opportunity to return a favor once offered by DCF to help reduce the Pasco Sheriff's Office backlog from more than six years ago. The Pasco CPI Unit now boasts a backlog of zero cases under Sheriff Bob White's leadership.
